Unfortunately, we start the week with bad news. Last Sunday, there was a tragedy in a very popular area for Polish divers – Svobodne Heřmanice. During an ice dive, two of our compatriots died, while the third one was hospitalised.

Three divers from the Bielsko-Biała region went diving in a flooded quarry, which is still covered by a 20cm layer of ice. We don’t know what exactly happened during the dive and what the causes of the accident were. However, the facts are that one of the men, after getting to the surface, called for help.

Unfortunately, the rescue services were unable to save his colleagues. Around midday, the body of the first diver was found. A further intensive search by police divers from the Czech Republic ended in the evening when the body of the second diver from Poland was found.

All the participants in the unfortunate dive were equipped with the equipment required to go under the ice. The reasons for the tragedy that occurred in Heřmanice are not known. Police experts are now investigating the course of events.

Svobodne Heřmanice attracts divers from the Czech Republic as well as from neighbouring countries because the flooded quarry is characterised by very good visibility. The maximum depth of 36 m allows for a number of interesting dives of various difficulty levels. The greatest difficulty during the dive is the low temperature of the water, which often causes the automatics to freeze. Such a situation was the cause of death of another Polish diver in this place in 2006.
