The wreck of an ancient hand-sewn boat found off the Croatian coast will soon be raised to the surface by specialists. The vessel, named Zambratija, is an object of special interest to archaeologists and will be studied by them in detail.
Researchers hope that after the raising scheduled for July 2 and transporting the wreck to a scientific facility, this unique ship will provide answers to many questions about ancient ways of shipbuilding.
Measuring 11 meters in length, the wreck was found in Zambratija Bay thanks to information obtained from local fisherman in 2008. Although many ancient shipwrecks have already been discovered in Croatia, the remains of a vessel dating to the 12th-10th century BC have caused a real sensation.
It is highly probable that in this case we are dealing with the oldest wreck of a hand-sewn boat ever found in Mediterranean waters.
The wooden elements of the boat’s hull were joined together using elastic fibers. This technique, which would seem to be very original, was known and used all over the globe. It was used even after the invention and popularization of metal elements, which were made to join parts of the boat’s planking.
The researchers also pointed out that the well-preserved wreck is a priceless example of the region’s ancient maritime traditions. That is why securing it and conducting detailed research is so important. Archaeologists hope that by having the wreck on the surface, they will be able, among other things, to more precisely determine its age and origin.
Dealing with remains of this caliber is a delicate matter, and every step of the process requires the utmost precautions to preserve this unique vessel – the official press release said.
Once the wreck is fully preserved and the examination is completed, the vessel will go on display at a museum in Pula. It will certainly be a great attraction for tourists and history enthusiasts visiting Croatia.
