In a harrowing incident off the southern coast of the Red Sea, the Sea Legend, a dive boat operated by Dive Pro Liveaboard, caught fire and sank earlier this week. The incident occurred under clear skies, turning what was supposed to be an adventure into a fight for survival. Despite the potential for disaster, all aboard the Sea Legend were rescued without any injuries. The boat was carrying 17 tourists from various countries along with a 14-member crew at the time of the incident. However,  we got information that one German diver is missing. Still waiting for confirmation on this.

Authorities were alerted promptly, leading to a swift evacuation and rescue operation.

All 31 individuals on the Sea Legend have been confirmed safe

a source informed Cairo 24, highlighting the efficiency of the rescue efforts.

Following the sinking of Sea Legend, the Red Sea Reserves have taken immediate action by forming an environmental committee comprised of researchers. Their task, starting today, is to assess the impact of the incident on the Marahani reefs. The committee aims to evaluate the extent of the damage, and its value, and compile an environmental report. This report will play a crucial role in legal proceedings and in determining the appropriate compensation for the affected area.

As the community and authorities come to terms with this unfortunate event, the focus remains on understanding the cause of the fire, preventing future incidents, and assessing the environmental repercussions. The Red Sea, known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, faces a new challenge in recovering from this incident.

Further details are expected to emerge as investigations continue. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and environmental protection efforts in preserving our natural wonders for future generations.

The increasing frequency of maritime accidents in Egypt, as highlighted by the alarming statistic of approximately five similar incidents last year alone, raises serious concerns about safety standards and protocols within the region’s marine and diving industry. These events not only pose significant risks to human life but also threaten the delicate marine ecosystems that are often the focus of these voyages. As we move further into 2024, the question looms large: how many more such accidents will occur? It is imperative for authorities, operators, and stakeholders to intensify their efforts towards enhancing safety measures, conducting rigorous inspections, and fostering a culture of safety to mitigate the risk of future incidents. The tragic sinking of the M/Y Sea Legend serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting these crucial aspects, underscoring the urgent need for action to prevent further loss and damage.

My love for scuba diving started as a 12-year-old in the Canary Islands, at which time I took my first Open Water Diver course. This love for the blue turned into a huge passion that accompanies me to this day. Although blue is hard to come by in the Baltic, no conditions are terrible for me. In this sport, I find peace, patience, courage, focus, and balance. I have recently started to engage in underwater modeling and I am fulfilled with this.
