The Deepest Breath – New amazing freediving documentary on Netflix

On the 19th of July, an extremely exciting documentary film The Deepest Breath made its world premiere, taking us into the amazing world of freediving.

The documentary was produced by A24, Motive Films, Ventureland and Raw, and the first screening of The Deepest Breath took place on the 22nd January 2023 at the highly prestigious Sundance Film Festival. However, even before that, Netflix secured the distribution rights to the motion picture and it is the platform where you can see it.

Directed by Laura McGann, the documentary features Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini in her quest to break the world record with the help of Irish freediver Stephan Keenan.

It has been a long and painful journey, lasting over 4 years, filled with vivid and strong memories, and many regrets. The film tells the story of our lives coming together through freediving: a path, unfortunately short, that gave us beautiful and unforgettable memories until the tragic ending,” – posted on her social media Alessia Zecchini.

I was driven to make “The Deepest Breath” by both the scenery and the emotional load of the whole story, and filming our unique characters in different parts of the world was the most inspiring and rewarding experience of my life. As a team, we are looking forward to working with Netflix to pay due respect to the discipline of freediving and the fearless characters in our film,” – said Laura McGann, director of The Deepest Breath.

Steve Keenan was one of the founders of Dahab Freedivers. He was the heart of the centre, and he left a legacy of golden human values, which he spread with real actions along his life. No film will ever be able to translate what a great person Steve was. But the director Laura McGann made a great job with this one, with unvaluable collaboration of Steve’s family, of Alessia Zecchini , and of many others, who had to go through painful memories just to finally allow us all to get to know a bit more about such a special human being who he was,” – we can read on the official page of Dahab Freedivers.
