In the Mexican state of Yucatán, a campaign was carried out to clean the cenotes of rubbish accumulated over the years. A total of 5 tonnes of rubbish of all kinds was collected and removed from flooded caves and their surroundings.

As well as getting rid of all unnecessary human remains, the action also involved planting trees to help and strengthen the local ecosystem. Many residents were able to get involved in this important action, making it a huge success.

To date, the cenotes of X-Pakay, Uitzán, X-Becal, Popolá, Chihuojol, Kaua, Libre Unión, Yaxcabá, Tabi and ChénHa have already been cleaned. A total of 5.5 tonnes of rubbish was collected from these 10 sites. Cenotes are unique formations and ecosystems with an extraordinary biological balance that can only be found in the Yucatán peninsula.

In addition, in Mayan culture cenotes were considered sacred places where sacrifices were made to the gods. Therefore, preserving them in the best possible condition is a key issue and priority for local authorities and communities living in the Yucatán.
