The Baltic Sea has once again recently received an inflow of saltwater from the North Sea. According to experts, this is a life-giving injection for our native body of water. The whole event took place during storms from 14 to 22 November, researchers at the Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung in Warnemünde reported.

According to the information provided, 76 km³ of water entered the Baltic during the November storms, which translates into 1.4 gigatonnes of salt. Professor Jan Marcin Węsławski from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot said that this is a very positive situation for our sea, because salt is life.

The reason for this is that the heavy, salty and well-oxygenated water will be spreading through the depths of the Baltic Sea for many years. This is of great importance for both flora and fauna, because, for example, cod eggs do not sink in such water. Otherwise the eggs sink into oxygen-deprived areas and die.

We previously reported on a similar situation less than a year ago. Then, at the end of December, there was an inflow of saltwater from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea, and it was the third largest such case since observations of similar phenomena began in 1880.
