Italy: Another Roman shipwreck found

In the deep waters of the province of Savona, divers have made an important archaeological find. An ancient shipwreck dating back to Roman times has fallen into the hands of researchers. The discovery was made in a place with the graceful name Riviera di Ponente.

The wreck was located at a depth of around 200 metres by divers from the Genoa Police, assisted by a remote-controlled ROV. Preliminary findings indicate that the vessel was a typical commercial vessel and was carrying a cargo of amphorae.

It was thanks to the markings on the vessels that archaeologists were able to determine the age of the wreck to the 1st or, at the latest, the 2nd century AD.

The whole operation was carried out under the supervision of archaeologists from the Ligurian Superintendency. On the one hand the archaeologists took an active part in the work, on the other hand they also supervised the activities carried out by the police officers.

Thanks to advanced technology and sophisticated methods, the combined forces of the diving section of the Genoa police and archaeologists from Liguria hope to soon produce an accurate map of the wrecks in the region.
