The Ichthyological Museum is located in the building of the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin at 4 Kazimierza Królewicza Street and can be visited from Thursday, 13 February.
The collections collected by employees of the Faculty of Food Sciences and Fishery of the ZUT during their scientific expeditions around the world have found their way there. Prof. Beata Więcaszek, Prof. Juliusz Chojnacki, Dr. Sławomir Keszka and Prof. Adam Tański are responsible for the arrangement and renovation of the collections – the university informed in the material sent to PAP on Wednesday.
“This museum will be a must-see for students of our faculty, but not only,” says museum supervisor Professor Adam Tanski. – “We will be inviting students from Szczecin’s secondary schools and primary schools to visit us, so that they can get to know the true face of the seas and oceans. It will also be a great opportunity to show – especially to secondary school students – what our faculty can offer them”.
The academic museum will host various exhibitions, the first of which will be dedicated to sharks.
“In specially prepared display cases we will see hammerhead shark, shark thresher, spiny dogfish, mustel, stingrays with electric organs and corals in a natural setting,” explains Professor Beata Więcaszek, who designed the museum’s exhibitions. – “Here you will also find a polar shark caught near Newfoundland in 1971, which measures 4 metres.
In another area, visitors will see a collection of fish that travel thousands of kilometres to spawn, including European eels and sea lampreys – species now extremely endangered in the Baltic Sea.
Other showcases feature exhibits by scientists from the Faculty of Food and Fisheries Sciences of the ZUT who participated in Antarctic research.
“They will be told through beautifully illustrated nature photographs and unusual exhibits from the southern hemisphere, including a 4-metre-long jaw of a humpback whale,” announces expedition participant Professor Juliusz Chojnacki.
The exhibition will also feature a laboratory fish hatchery and aquariums with marine and freshwater fish including clownfish, cichlids, hornworms and spadefish.
