Pete Mesley began his adventure with scuba diving and exploration of the underwater world on the south coast of England in 1990. Then in 1994 he moved to a much warmer and more exotic region – New Zealand. In his underwater journey, which has lasted more than three decades, he took part in many expeditions and, with the help of his stunning photographs, showed the world many wonderful places, often never before seen by human eyes.

He has been an instructor trainer and technical instructor teaching rebreather diving for over 25 years. Interestingly and worth noting, Pete is probably the most experienced technical diver, instructor and explorer based in the Southern Hemisphere.

Over the course of his extremely colourful and prolific diving career, Pete Mesley has been searching for, finding, exploring and documenting amazing wrecks, as well as caves. During this time, his passion has taken him as a participant in various expeditions to 29 countries, where he was discovering secrets hidden underwater. Not surprisingly, he has specialised in organising and leading expeditions for technical divers to the most remote and exotic locations around the world.

A not less interesting chapter in his life is the work as a Dive Safety Officer (DSO) on many underwater film sessions for some of the biggest TV stations in the world including Natural History, National Geographic and many others. With his numerous skills, he is always a great addition to the team for any expedition. He is a Dive Medical Technician (DMT) and a fully qualified hyperbaric chamber operator. Pete Mesley has also co-authored seven scientific studies that have been published in prestigious medical journals around the world.

However, most people in the diving community recognise Pete for his fantastic underwater photographs. After all, which wreck diving enthusiast hasn’t at least once come across the beautiful photographs of sunken ships bearing the characteristic ‘Lust4Rust‘ logo? His undoubted talent, enormous skills and more than two decades of experience help him to bring out the magic hidden in the underwater world and present it on the surface.

All the elements gathered above made it an easy choice to invite him to participate in Diving Talks 2023. Fortunately, Pete Mesley had no expedition planned at the time and we will be able to meet him in Lisbon!
