Gareth Lock is the owner and founder of The Human Diver organization. He established it to provide divers with the proper knowledge, experience, and practice of human factors from high-risk domains and academia in the sport of diving.
Since January 2016, when he founded The Human Diver, he has trained hundreds of people in face-to-face classes around the world and thousands through online programs and webinars. Gareth Lock also wrote and published Under Pressure: Diving Deeper with Human Factors. It is the only textbook dedicated to this topic. In turn, in May 2019, he released the film “If Only…,” which looks at a fatal diving accident through the lens of human factors and Just Culture.
Over the last 3 years, he has also led two reviews of fatal military diving accidents on behalf of Defence departments, applying systems thinking and human factors.
Recognizing that the need for Human Factors is greater than one person can provide, Gareth Lock has also trained ten instructors to help spread the Human Diver content further around the world. He is also working with two training agencies to incorporate Human Factors concepts and tools into instructor training and diver training materials.

Gareth Lock is a renowned expert in human factors and safety within the diving community. He holds a Master’s degree in Aerospace Systems Engineering from the University of Southampton and a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Bath.
With a background in aviation, Gareth served as a Flight Test Engineer and Flight Safety Specialist for the Royal Air Force (RAF) for over 25 years. His experiences in the RAF, combined with his passion for diving, led him to recognize the need for a greater focus on human factors in diving safety.
In 2016, Gareth founded The Human Diver, an organization dedicated to improving safety and performance in diving through the understanding and application of human factors principles. He has since become an influential figure within the global diving community, offering training courses, workshops, and coaching services to divers at all levels.
Gareth is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, “Under Pressure: Diving Deeper with Human Factors” which explores the role of human factors in diving incidents and how to minimize risk. He is a frequent speaker at diving conferences and events, sharing his knowledge and passion for creating a safer diving environment.
Through his work, Gareth Lock continues to shape the future of diving safety, helping divers understand the importance of human factors and implement strategies to reduce accidents and improve overall performance.
