The plot tells the story of two half-sisters, Ida and Tuva, who go diving in a remote part of the Norwegian coast a few days before Christmas. At the end of the dive, an accident occurs when Tuva becomes trapped underwater due to a rock slide. Ida rushes in to call for help, but here it turns out that things have also become complicated above the surface.
As a result of a landslide that trapped one of the sisters underwater, all the equipment left on the shore – phones, car keys, etc. – was buried under the rocks. The women are left to fend for themselves in a frantic struggle against time and their own weaknesses, which only strength of character and the will to survive can counteract.
The film’s budget was only 3.4 million Euros, so we cannot expect miracles. On the other hand, if the money is used wisely and the plot is good, we may be pleasantly surprised. Especially that it is a production with a limited cast, the action of which takes place in the wilderness. Therefore, a large part of this sum was certainly spent on special effects and post-production.
Staying on the technical side, it should be mentioned that the film lasts 85 minutes and Breaking Surface is written and directed by 53-year-old Swedish director Joachim Hedén, whose credits include New York Waits, The Family and 10,000 Timmar. In turn, the leading roles are played by Moa Gammel, Madeleine Martin, Lena Hope, Olle Wirenhed and Trine Wiggen, among others.
Tiffany Norberg, one half of the Baltic Circle Diving duo, who you could meet at last year’s Baltictech conference and by reading the 11th issue of DIVERS24 magazine, is certainly an interesting addition to the production. Tiff as an experienced technical diver worked on the film as an expert and as an understudy during the filming of underwater scenes.
It is not yet known if the film will be released in Polish cinemas, but let’s hope that in one way or another Breaking Surface will also be available to Polish audiences. It’s also nice to see that in recent years, many forms of diving (recreational/professional/technical) are becoming an element that filmmakers are eager to reach for. Let’s keep it up!
