Last year, Ahmed Gabr set a new Guinness World Record and became the man who managed to descend the deepest in open water – 332.35m. Now, using his popularity and media attention, the Egyptian has decided to draw the world’s attention to the problems faced by many popular dive sites with another record.

Already in June, 400 divers will go underwater simultaneously to set another Guinness record. More important than the record, however, is the main reason for diving. Several hundred divers will focus on cleaning the bottom of the Red Sea, which has been seriously degraded in recent years.

The previous record belongs to a group of 300 divers who set it by going underwater in the United Arab Emirates.

“This international event will have a huge impact in increasing tourism and bringing worldwide attention to recreational diving in Egypt, as well as the efforts made by the Egyptian authorities in preserving and maintaining the ecological balance,” – said Mostafa Abdel Latif, undersecretary from the Ministry of Tourism.

Ahmed Gabr set his record of 332.25m in September 2014 at one of Egypt’s favourite technical diving sites, Dahab. In doing so, he broke the record of 318.25m held by South African diving legend Nuno Gomes.
