In Świnoujście, an operation has been underway since yesterday to extract the tug Kuguar, which sank in the harbour on 16 February 2015. The vessel found itself on the bottom as a result of a collision with another vessel. As determined by the police, four crew members were under the influence of alcohol.
The excavation work had already begun yesterday. A group of divers was sent underwater to prepare the wreck and its immediate vicinity for lifting by crane. The first stage of the work was to pull steel cables under the hull of the sunken vessel. Thanks to them it will be possible to lift the Kuguar by a crane.
“The ropes on which the sunken vessel will be pulled out have to be pulled under the hull. The places under it have already been prepared by divers. If we are able to put the ropes in place quickly, we will take the vessel, but it is not certain that we will be able to do it during the day,” explained Jarosław Dydo from the Shipping Services Company
For this purpose, the floating crane “Maja” was brought to Świnoujście – the most famous crane working on the Polish coast, which has a lifting capacity of 330 tonnes on its main hook. The machine is truly unique and is used in all major excavation operations.
The recovery plan was to pump out the water from inside the vessel and then transport the tug to a location where police, prosecutors and port services personnel could inspect it.
Unfortunately, problems arose when fixing the ropes due to the shape of the bottom.
“On Sunday we managed to tighten one of the thick ropes to the hull. However, it did not appear on the other side of the ship. Unfortunately the shape of the bottom of the harbour channel blocked this process. We are working until sunset to pull the rope from the stern side, to prepare for installing the equipment on Tuesday and lifting the wreck from the bottom”. – Jarosław Dydo from ZUŻ explains.
The 37-year-old tugboat captain has already pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a waterborne motor vehicle while intoxicated. He faces the loss of his licence and up to two years imprisonment.
