Teddy Tucker, the legendary treasure hunter and wreck diver from the US, has died at the age of 89. He became most famous for finding treasure on the wreck of the San Pedro. Among the artifacts unearthed was a beautiful gold cross set with emeralds, which is now known as “Tuckers Cross”. News of his death on June 9 was released by his immediate family.
Born 8 May 1925. Edward Tucker began his diving adventure in the late 1940s. In 1957, together with Mendel Peterson of the Smithsonian Institute and members of the Armed Forces History Department, he developed a grid system for investigating sunken wrecks.
1983, he was also a founder and participant in the famous Beebe Project, which played a significant role in the discovery of new species living in the deep sea. It was 1983 and research was already being carried out using underwater vehicles and specially designed cameras.
During his career he discovered over 100 wrecks in the Bermuda area. He was a lecturer, historian and also an artist. He participated as a consultant in many films and books, including the famous “The Deep”.
“Teddy brought the world to Bermuda and gave Bermuda to the world,” – said Peter Benchley, author of The Deep
Edward Tucker belonged to many prestigious organisations and associations and was the recipient of many awards for his scientific work.
According to a representative of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, of which he was a founder and member, his work and character helped to instil in many young people a passion for exploring the underwater world.
