An unusual discovery was made by workers in Stockholm. Builders working near the Grand Hotel realised while digging up the site that they had found an archaeological find. The Maritime Museum staff were immediately alerted, and on arrival they rubbed their eyes in amazement.

As it turned out, the find in the centre of Stockholm turned out to be… a shipwreck made in a technology where the boards making up the sides were sewn together. Hans-Lennart Ohlsson, director of the Maritime Museum, said that it is most likely a remnant of the docks and shipyards that were located in Blasieholmen in the 17th century. He also expressed his gratitude to the workers who notified the relevant authorities so quickly.

The staff sent to investigate the matter arrived on the scene without any special expectations, but after a while they realised how unusual the discovery was, reports one of the museum’s employees, Jim Hansen.

The samples taken at the site were sent to the National Museum in Copenhagen for further analysis. Among other things, they will be subjected to dendrochronological analysis in order to determine the age of the find, but predictions are already being made that the find dates to before 1700.

Further construction work, will be carried out in collaboration with the museum staff, in the hope of making further discoveries.
