The professional preparation for descending into Eagle’s Nest cave in Hernando County, Florida was forgotten by 2 divers. Dillon Sanchez and his father Darrin Spivey on the first day of Christmas were eager to test out their son’s new diving equipment he received as a Christmas present. According to friends, the parent was a certified diver, but not a cave diver and unfortunately the trip ended tragically.

The fiancée of one of the divers asked for help from Hernando authorities after she was unable to contact her loved one by phone. According to the sheriff’s office, the father and son were seen by the hunter around 11am. The witness confirmed that the site appeared to be adjusted and ready for diving. When he returned around 6:30 p.m. he did not see the divers anywhere, even though the car was standing in the same place.

Tragic accident in Florida

Technical divers found the father’s body at a depth of 22 metres, while the son’s body was discovered at a depth of around 38 metres inside the cave. In the course of the investigation it was necessary for a forensic doctor to establish the exact causes and circumstances of the tragedy.

Eagle’s Nest located in the Chassahowitzka Wildfire area is one of the most amazing, but also most dangerous caves. Discovered in 1960, it attracts daredevils from all over the world, who want to dive its corridors. It is estimated that within 30 years many divers’ lives will have been lost while exploring this place. Although the cave is huge and stretches hundreds of metres, it has only one entrance. The cramped corridors are interspersed with more rooms, which can be so big that you have to swim near the ceiling in order not to lose your orientation.

As a warning to some “deep sea conquerors” it is worth remembering to dive responsibly!
