The set, consisting of 230 tin vessels made in England, went down on board a Spanish vessel that sank in 1540. Interestingly according to the information given it was a ship carrying the Spanish ambassador to what was then Hispaniole (Dominican Republic).

The set of plates was supposed to have found its way to the residence of the Spanish governor. Some of the dishes bear marks indicating that they were made by Sir Thomas Curtis, London’s most distinguished maker of similar goods. A set of six octagonal plates bearing his mark sold for £27,000.

As it turns out, however, despite losing his galleon and all his possessions, the ambassador swam to shore and was the only survivor. It is therefore safe to say that he managed to save his most precious possessions.
