This photo was taken by Lauri Näreneva in the Mayan Blue cenote in Mexico, near tunnel B, near the entrance. I like the whole Mayan Blue system. What defines it is the diversity – there are sections with white walls and salt water, almost completely black tunnels with fresh water, colours from dark brown to yellow and from green to deep blue. There are also beautiful but not overwhelming rock formations.

The frame was captured at the end of the dive. “I was just trying to swim forward without disturbing the heliocline so I could position myself properly to take the photo. Later while processing the photo it caught my attention. It managed to catch the green tint of the fresh water quite nicely, as well as some of the blue tones of the salt water below. I also like the way the layers of water blend together without disturbing the photo. “

The divers pictured are, from left, Ville Jaaskelainen, JouniHartikainen and Petri Jehkonen.

Exposure was 1/15 sec at f/8.0, ISO 800 and using a 10mm fisheye.
