Near the Redłowo Cliff in Gdynia, the sea has thrown up fragments of a shipwreck. These are most likely the remains of a 17th century sailing shipwreck discovered last year during a routine survey of the seabed.

We wrote about the discovery earlier in an article about finding wrecks of two sailing ships at the bottom of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The remains were secured by employees of the Polish Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. To protect them from drying out and falling apart, they were transported to Gdańsk and placed in the pool of the Canoe Club on Ołowianka Island.

“The wooden structural elements of the ship’s hull were thrown onto the beach a few weeks ago by the rough sea,” says Iwona Pomian, head of the CMM Underwater Research Department.

These are ten frames with staves of double plating – outer and inner. We suppose that these may be fragments of one of the two sailing shipwrecks we initially examined last year. They were discovered by a team from the Maritime Survey Department of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, who were conducting hydrographic works on the roadsteads of the Gdynia and Gdańsk harbours,” explains Pomian.
