I recently came across a very interesting piece of information on the web. In autumn archaeologists will search two lakes near Grunwald. The aim of the search will be to find traces left in 1410 during one of the most famous battles of the Polish armies. Let’s hope that during the research we will find real treasures!

The lakes that will be examined by archaeologists are Lubień and Gardyny. It is in their waters that the teams of archaeologists will carry out a series of dives, trying to find traces of the stay of knights in this area.

Underwater research will be only a part of a large-scale search. As Dr. Sławomir Moćkun representing the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald informs, during the September search archaeologists intend to comb an area of about 500 hectares! Our compatriots will be supported by experienced colleagues from Denmark and Norway, who specialise in metal detector searches.

The centre of the search is to be the area where the Teutonic stronghold of Gardyny once stood. This place was conquered and burnt down by an army under the command of the Polish king Władysław Jagiełło, who marched from Dąbrówno to Grunwald.

According to the information provided by Dr. Moćkuń, both basins will be checked using electromagnets, dragged along their bottoms. In this way archaeologists hope to find objects lost during the war or intentionally sunk by the knights of the Teutonic Order.

This is not the first time the above-mentioned bodies of water have been explored in search of remains from the year 1410. Already in the 1960s military divers combed the bottom, but then they did not manage to find anything interesting.

Let us hope that this autumn we will already know the answer to several questions and will be pleasantly surprised by the results of the search. In fact, it is still unknown where exactly the clash of Polish arms with the monastic army took place. Archaeologists are secretly hoping to find the graves of the knights killed in this clash.
