Polish dive scooter manufacturer Seacraft has unveiled a new ENC3-PRO navigation model dedicated to its units.
The ENC3-PRO is a military-grade navigation device and is derived from the ENC3-MIL model, which hit the military market in 2019. Until now, it was only available to the military and special units. Now any user will be able to use this advanced navigation during their dives.
As we know very well, underwater there is no way to receive the GPS signal because it is absorbed by the water. Therefore, underwater navigation is much more complicated than that known from the surface. It requires dedicated equipment, such as the ENC3, which uses dead-reckoning position calculation.
When the float reaches the surface, the diver’s actual position is recalibrated to compensate for any drift caused by ocean currents and have an updated actual position. With the version with a buoy and a 3m or 10m cable, you can get the GPS position without surfacing.
The ENC3-PRO electronic navigation console allows the connection of a dedicated external miniature GPS receiver, which can be quickly connected to the console in several ways.
In the version with a short cable and a GPS module mounted directly on the ENC, recalibration can be done every time the diver ascends to the surface, making it ideal for shallow dives.
Underwater, you can select any predetermined destination and at any time to navigate to that specific point.
ENC3-PRO calculates a diver’s underwater position using the same method as ENC3. When no GPS position is available, it will use calculated dead-reckoning data as the source of underwater position.
When the GPS signal is acquired with sufficient reliability, the position will be recalibrated as the so-called FIX position, and the ENC3-PRO will start further position calculation from that point.
The diver can follow the pre-planned points one by one or decide (depending on the situation) where he wants to navigate.
Up to 29 waypoints can be easily programmed using the free PC software. Point positions can be selected directly on the map, saved as GPS coordinates or as azimuth/distance.
Each point can have a short text description that will be displayed on the ENC underwater. During a dive, you can select any pre-set target at any time to navigate to that specific point.
After the dive, the saved traces can be accessed and reviewed. A number of export options are available to make it easy to process the traces in, for example, Google Earth, GIS programs, or even access the raw data in .csv format.
All GPS positions obtained are stored in the device’s memory and enable detailed research, such as archaeological or scientific research.
The miniature B-type modular GPS receiver provides a variety of installation options and allows for fast and precise position measurements.
The same module can be directly connected to the ENC3M with a 0.1m cable, or used with a 3m, or 10m cable and additional buoyancy floats. Changing the cable is very simple and requires no tools. The cables, on the other hand, can be easily wound onto the dedicated brackets included with the DPV.
Without a doubt, Sweden is famous for its magnificent wrecks that rest at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. One of them is the magnificent Bodekull warship wreck from the 17th century, which we visited in 2021. You will read more about it in issue 19 the DIVERS24 quarterly magazine! The digital version of the magazine is available free of charge, while you can purchase the printed version in our online shop.
