Mola mola fish are gigantic creatures that are usually found in tropical waters. In recent years, these giants have increasingly been spotted in much colder waters too. Last week a mola mola was spotted on the west coast of Scotland.

This is the fourth time this year that a representative of this species has been recorded by the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. This oceanic fish is the largest and heaviest bonefish in the world. Its size reaches 3 metres and its weight exceeds 2 tonnes!

The longliner was spotted on Friday 31 August, by the crew of a fishing boat on the north coast of Skye. Mola mola drifting in ocean currents have rarely been seen in Scotland, but in recent years boat operators have reported many more encounters with the species, particularly in August.

Self-heads feed mainly on jellyfish and are encountered up to depths of 600 metres.
