The wreckage of an American bomber dating back to World War II has been discovered in the Danube River in Hungary. The remains of the downed machine were discovered thanks to the unusually low water level, a result of this year’s drought. The find was reported by the Szolnek Aviation Museum.

The Institute and Museum of Military History, as well as the Hungarian Association for Wreck Investigation, were informed about the wreckage of the aircraft found in the Danube waters. On closer inspection, it turned out that a four-metre-long girder with engine mountings had been found in the river.

A search of the archives has established that on 30 July 1944, the 485th Bomb Group of the 15th US Air Force, attacked the nearby Danube Aircraft Factory. It was here that German Messerschmitts were manufactured. At the time, Hungary was under occupation, from its recent ally Germany.

An American B-24G bomber of the 485th Bomb Group of the 15th United States Air Force, piloted by Lieutenant Frank Wodzinski, was shot down by anti-aircraft defences during an attack. The machine went into a vertical dive, ending up in the waters of the Danube. Only one of the crew survived.
