Divemaster Seth Greenspan, creator of the 8min film, has been announced as the winner of the PADI Sea the Change conservation contest. The winner submitted work to the competition with the theme of documenting, the resurgence of coral reefs around the world.

Greenspan was awarded the top prize of $5,000 for his film and a further $5,000 was donated by PADI to Project AWARE, an environmental charity nominated by the filmmaker.

“I am incredibly grateful to PADI for giving me the opportunity to share my work and information about the state of coral reefs. I am currently working on a documentary film showing the dire situation on many reefs. I will use the money from my winnings to further this project.”

Organised by PADI, the competition provided an opportunity not only to win a substantial sum, but above all to encourage people to grab a camera and show others how they care for the environment on their dives.

The reaction was great! Several hundred thousand visits to the competition website and hundreds of participants submitting their films – this exceeded the organisers’ wildest expectations. The topics were varied. From joint beach clean-ups to organised actions, activating public authorities.

The competition also showed the power of social networks, whose mediation is invaluable in such situations. The organisers, thanks to such Internet giants as Facebook and Youtube, want to reach as many people as possible with their message. We all have to take care of our surroundings, so that the most magnificent dive sites can continue to delight the eyes of future divers.
