A 41-year-old woman died yesterday (10.09) in Olsztyn while diving in Lake Ukiel. The dive involved a total of 10 people who, according to various sources, aimed for a depth of 30 or 40 metres. During the dive, two of the women had problems that could have been the cause of the tragedy.

The dive started at around 19.00 and the first part of the dive went according to plan. Problems arose during ascent. According to the information available, the victim surfaced too quickly and therefore decided to dive again together with another woman.

“The divers dived on a special platform into a boat submerged at a depth of 30 metres. The two women probably surfaced too quickly and had to dive again to a depth of about 6 metres to perform decompression. In such a case, i.e. without additional decompression, the diver is at risk of injury,” – explains Sławomir Filipowicz, a spokesman for the City Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Olsztyn

“We carry out the rescue operation for two hours, because then there is still a chance to save the drowning person. After two hours we move on to a search operation. We finished the rescue operation at around 21:30, poor visibility and danger prevented us from continuing it. Five divers went underwater twice: to a depth of 30 and 35 metres. However, it was not possible to find the 35-year-old woman,” informs the spokesman.

The body of the accident victim was found around 1.00 a.m. The case is being investigated by Olsztyn police and prosecutors.
