Mark Caney started his diving journey while serving in the British Army. On his return to civilian life in 1980, he continued to develop in this direction and
moved to Cyprus, where he opened a diving centre. It was a wonderful period when scuba diving was thriving and the foundations of the sport as it is today were being laid.
For nearly two decades, he has been involved in a wide variety of exciting diving projects and instructor training around the world. He also led an award-winning, four-month diving expedition to east Africa.
In 1996, he became vice-president of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors – PADI. Working from the organisation’s headquarters located in Bristol, England, he was responsible for operations in the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions. After 20 years, in 2016, Mark moved to PADI Worldwide, where he serves as the organisation’s global representative.
It was he who played a key role in the setting up of PADI TecRec training for closed circuits. Now Mark Caney is involved in creating ISO standards for rebreather diver training and scientific diving.
So, as you can see, he is a high-class expert and it is hardly surprising that the organisers of Diving Talks wanted to have him among the speakers once again.
Mark Caney is well known in the diving world; he is the President of the European Underwater Federation, is President of the Rebreather Training Council and continues to serve in the senior positions in leading diving industry bodies such as the World Recreational Scuba Training Council. He is also the chairman of a major marine charity, PADI AWARE Foundation for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
In addition, he is the author of the novel Dolphin Way – Rise of the Guardians, which was published as a book in 2016 and also as an audiobook in 2020.
