The German F5b training torpedo excavated as part of the activities carried out by the team focused on the Miedwie Zone is currently undergoing conservation. It is in the course of this process that the unusual relic from World War II is unveiling its next secrets.

The latest discovery related to the F5b training aerial torpedo, is the extraction of a blotter recording the path taken by the missile. In addition, we now know that the recorder, which has also been preserved and secured, is fully operational.

“The test strip was saved literally at the last moment – the rubber seal was unsealed and water entered the capsule, which almost destroyed this interesting historical testimony. The interpretation of the chart will be a unique task,” writes the website of the Fort Gerhard – Coastal Defence Museum

Torpedoes of this type were developed in the years of World War II at the request of the Luftwaffe command. They were designed to be dropped from aircraft moving at a speed of around 250 km/h at a height of up to 40 m. More than 2,000 were produced in total, and they were tested on Lake Miedwie by the Kriegsmarine.
