In the belly of the stingray they found a book, a bottle, cigarettes and a camera

More than once we have heard of dead inhabitants of the deep in whose bellies all sorts of rubbish was found, which was the cause of their death. However, this does not change the fact that every such case is a sad testimony to our times and to the progressive degradation of the seas and oceans. Unfortunately, there is only one guilty party – man.

Volunteers from the 5minutebeachcleanup group spotted a stingray floating on the water while cleaning one of the beaches. Upon closer inspection of the dead individual and opening the animal’s abdominal cavity, they found, among other things, a bottle, a book, a camera and even a packet of cigarettes in its guts.

Rubbish thrown by people that ended up in the ocean was the direct cause of the animal’s death. This situation shows the enormous scale of water pollution worldwide and is only a small part of the drama that is taking place under the surface of the water.

Let us hope that these and other similar testimonies to the degradation of marine wildlife will act as shock therapy and contribute to changing our thinking and behaviour. Otherwise we will not be able to reverse the situation, and time is running out.
