The President of Colombia has announced the discovery of the wreck of the Spanish galleon San Jose, which was sunk by the British 307 years ago. What arouses most interest is the contents of the ship’s hold, about which real legends circulate. According to estimates, under the deck there were valuables with a present-day value of about $17 billion.

The discovery was made on 27 November, but until Friday 4 December, no one had been informed of the find. The first to break the silence was Colombia’s president, who wrote on his Twitter profile:

“Great news! We found the San Jose galleon!” The next day, during a press conference, he said in turn – “I am very happy, as head of state, to communicate to you that we have found, without any doubt, the San Jose galleon sunk 307 years ago.

Speaking of wreck exploration, this is undoubtedly one of the greatest discoveries in history. The myth, the true legend firing the heads of searchers and enthusiasts from all over the world is officially found and soon we will know the real value of the cargo!

The Spanish ship had 3 decks, 600 crew members, measured 45 metres and was armed with 64 guns. It was the specificity of the latter that allowed the ship’s name to be confirmed. Researchers have reported that the bronze cannons are in excellent condition and will certainly make excellent museum exhibits. The same applies to the personal weapons of the crew, as well as porcelain and ceramics.

Another interesting piece of information is the denial of the most popular thesis concerning the sinking of the galleon. As it turned out after examination of the wreck, the vessel did not explode at all, and the reasons for her momentary sinking must be sought in other factors. Many books describing the history of San Jose will therefore have to be corrected on this point.

The media present at the press conference were also told that work on the wreck to extract the valuable cargo will certainly continue for the next few years.
