KRAKÓW

As part of the last meeting before the festival in Krakow there will be a screening of the film 180 STOPS TO THE SOUTH and a meeting with Dr. Paweł Skawiński, director of the Tatra National Park, entitled “Can Wilderness and Primordialism be Saved? “Can wildness and primordiality of precious places on Earth be saved? Can the wildness and primordiality of the Tatra Mountains be saved?”. We invite you to the event on 28 November at 7 pm in the Club u Louisa (Krakow, Rynek Główny 13). Entry free.

Dr Paweł Skawiński became interested in the Tatras when he was a child thanks to the family tradition of frequent trips. He was taken to the mountains by his grandmother, a member of the Tatra Society, and his mother. His first climbing trips were made in the company of a mountaineer Paweł Vogel. At the age of 16, he climbed Mnich together with him. However, he has always been attracted to mountains more as a space for a unique contact with the surrounding world and nature than as an arena for sports achievements. Naturally he chose to study at the Faculty of Forestry, and after graduation he worked for 16 years at the Polish Academy of Sciences studying the Tatra Mountains. While still a student he became a Tatra guide, TOPR rescuer and ski instructor. – I really wanted to work in the Tatra National Park, but I had to wait 16 years for that,” he recalls. He was already a doctor of forestry at that time. He became the director of TPN in 2001. – The Tatra Mountains fascinate me as a whole, but I am particularly interested in the nature and human relations with the mountains and nature. I would like to teach such a way of being in the mountains that one does not want to kill oneself and does not want to kill nature – he says.

2 SPORTS FILM FESTIVAL

WROCŁAW

In Wrocław, the festival starts on 5.12., so we invite you to a warm-up meeting on Sunday, 2.12. At 7 p.m. in the Czech Film pub (ul. Kiełbaśnicza 2) there will be a screening of THE MAN WHO DIED FROM EVEREST and a meeting with Michał Trzebunia. Entry free.

THE MAN WHO HIKED DOWN EVEREST tells the story of Yiuchiro Miura – skier, traveller, poet – who dreams of descending the highest mountain in the world. This dream means climbing to a height of 7,800 metres with the help of 800 porters, 8 of whom will give their lives for the undertaking, and then descending 2,400 metres down an ice-covered hill with an incline of 40-45 degrees. In the film adaptation of Miura’s diary we learn of his struggles with the steep hill, the strong winds, and finally the finale of this extraordinary escapade – the critical 6 minutes have been hailed as the most exciting footage ever filmed. Filmed in 1975, the film provides an opportunity to compare skiing techniques and how things were done in the high mountains more than 30 years ago.

The guest of the meeting will be Michal Trzebunia, one of the most famous Polish freeriders. His skiing beginnings were of course alpine skiing, which became a solid base for freeride. In the mid 90s he started looking at off-piste terrain. He competed in the Freeride World Tour, Nissan Freeride Quest and Jasna Adrenalin (1st place). For the last two seasons he has mostly devoted himself to producing freeski films. His latest production is “The Emotions”.

Information on meetings can be found at http://festival.360stopni.org/category/festiwal/rozbieg/.

Numerous meetings accompanying the screenings are also planned during the festival. Guests will include American football teams: WARSAW AEGLES, WARSAW SIRENS and DEVILS WROCŁAW, Leszek Cichy, Marek Kamiński, Piotr Kuryło, Ola Sulkiewicz, representatives of the Warsaw, Krakow and Wrocław ZOOs, people connected with the Tatra National Park, Mariusz Kalista, Piotr Betlej, Bartiosz Morawiec, journalists from Canal+ sports editorial (including Tomasz Smokowski and Grzegorz Milko) and others. Detailed information on the meetings will be available soon.
