An interesting interactive map has been created, showing the location of more than 1,100 WWI wrecks. The map zooms in on the resting place of many vessels off the southern coast of England.

Among the units marked are naval shipwrecks, passenger shipwrecks, hospital units and aircraft and submarine wrecks. The four-year project, entitled Forgotten Wrecks, was developed by the Southampton Maritime Archaeology Trust. The map can be found here.

When viewing the resulting map, users can zoom in and out to learn more about sunken shipwrecks from around the world. The aim of the project was to create documentation before the wrecks disintegrate and disappear into the darkness of history.

Among the wrecks described you will find vessels from the USA, Norway, Germany, Denmark and Great Britain. The histories of the individual wrecks have been compiled from survey results, geophysical images, dive films, artefacts and historical photographs.

More than 400 volunteers were involved in the project and the whole exercise cost nearly £1.2m.
