Dangerous finds from under the water…

Everyone knows that many interesting things can be found underwater. Great occasions for such searches are all kinds of actions of cleaning various bodies of water. Then, apart from the useful aspect of removing rubbish lying on the bottom, you can find valuable, antique, funny and unusual, but also dangerous remnants of World War II…

On Saturday 17 November 2018, as previously agreed, we met at the COS in Giżycko for the noble purpose of removing from the bottom of Lake Kisajno what “should not be there”. The action was organised by the Płetwal Scuba Club in Giżycko, in cooperation with lifeguards and divers of the Mazury Voluntary Rescue Service.

In total, 10 divers entered the water. The action was secured by the MOPR vessel, but as it soon turned out, it was not the only service that appeared on the scene. After a short briefing, we set off into the water with the combative intention of retrieving as much as possible of what “should not be there”.

After only 15 minutes Marcin Mieronowicz (having in mind the guidelines given by Michał Warchoł during the briefing) surfaced from the depth of 74 cm and informed us that there was a mortar shell on the bottom. As it soon turned out, Marcin knew a bit about it and his diagnosis was correct.

Moments later, a diving team of Arek Drężek and Daniel Winiarz came across another remnant of military activity. Thanks to the immediate reaction of the divers, at 2.30 p.m. soldiers of the 10th Mine Action Patrol, commanded by Cpl. Wacław Maksymiak took up the dangerous objects and secured them.

During the action we filled a large black 1100 litre rubbish container with rubbish from the bottom of the lake and after a modest regenerative meal with a sense of a job well done we dispersed home.

And so, once again, thanks to us – the Swimmers and the MOPR lifeguards, the lake is much safer. Many thanks to MOPR Gi¿ycko for securing the action from the water and their contribution to cleaning the lake. The Flippers can’t thank themselves, but it’s obvious: Michał, Arek, Daniel, Sylwek, Marcin, Eryk, well done!

How to behave when we come across a dangerous find underwater? You can find out in our archived text “What should you do if you come across a ‘bomb’ while diving instead of a priceless artefact?
