As naszbaltyk.com reports, at the end of last year, there was a massive inflow of water from the North Sea into our beloved Baltic Sea. What is unusual about it? What does this rare phenomenon entail? What impact will it have on the Baltic Sea? Well, according to experts, quite a lot!

Similar studies and observations have been conducted since the late 19th century, specifically since 1880. According to data collected over the past 135 years by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, the described impact recorded between 13 and 26 December 2014, was the third largest!

This situation may have a salutary effect on the increasingly degraded life in the Baltic Sea. Above all, the oxygenation of the Baltic waters is to improve, which in turn will stimulate the entire ecosystem and its development. It is precisely the lack of inflows in recent decades that has been one of the factors adversely affecting the Baltic’s fauna and flora. Fish stocks have shrunk, as have the habitats of certain species such as cod.

According to the researchers, the most important thing in the further development of the situation will be how far the inflowing waters will now move. If they manage to reach the Gdansk or Gotland hinterland, there is a high probability that these places will again become spawning grounds for the cod in question.

The development of the situation is monitored by the Sea Fisheries Institute and also by the National Research Institute.

For the diving community it is of course also great news. The Baltic Sea holds a special place in the hearts of Polish divers. It is a beautiful and unique body of water in the world scale. With the bottom strewn with a mass of magnificent wrecks representing past eras. If, thanks to the observed inflow, there will be an increase in the population of various species, the Baltic will become even more attractive and we will all certainly benefit from it.
