Shafraz Naeem, a technical diver from the Maldives, has completed a 50-hour dive. In doing so, he set a regional record for time spent underwater and also marked the 50th anniversary of the country’s diving industry. The whole event also had a wider dimension, which was to raise awareness about ocean pollution.

50 hours underwater – mission accomplished!

Naeem began diving in the afternoon on Friday, February 25, as part of the 6/50 event. His plan was to spend the next 50 hours underwater, near the resorts of Anantara Veli and Dhigu. All because the diving industry in the Maldives is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Although demanding, Shafraz Naeem completed his challenge without any problems on Sunday 27 February. In doing so, he set a National and regional record for longest open water dive. However, his aim was also to draw attention to the damage caused to the country’s marine ecosystems by plastic pollution.

Shafraz Naeem started diving in 1998 and has a very extensive knowledge of diving in the Maldives. He is a former military dive instructor with a 27 year career in the diving industry and is an experienced TDI/SDI, PADI and SSI instructor. In the past he has also worked with underwater film crews from around the world. In recent years he has become more involved in underwater photography. His work has been published in various local and international magazines.

About author

Julia
My love for scuba diving started as a 12-year-old in the Canary Islands, at which time I took my first Open Water Diver course. This love for the blue turned into a huge passion that accompanies me to this day. Although blue is hard to come by in the Baltic, no conditions are terrible for me. In this sport, I find peace, patience, courage, focus, and balance. I have recently started to engage in underwater modeling and I am fulfilled with this.
