Fontanazzi cave

How can a cave be ‘exclusive’? This was well explained by the Eternal on our last trip. The principle is the same as with other luxury goods like cars. Everyone has heard about them, everyone would like to drive one and everyone would like to experience something unforgettable. But unfortunately, not everyone can afford it.

It’s the same with the Fontanazzi c ave. If you have a high enough skill level and can “afford” to face your fears and go inside, it will reward you with sights and challenges that you can’t find in vain in other caves.

cave diving in Italy Of the four surrounding caves, it is neither the deepest nor the longest, yet for a whole lot of divers it is one of the most beautiful caves in Europe. Its magic lies in diversity, because apart from the terminals, there are corridors so spacious that they are impossible to be covered by the light of torches. Apart from horizontal corridors, there are also vertical wells several dozen metres deep. The smooth and slippery rocks are contrasted with others, so sharp that you could cut your suit on them.

In addition, there are many crossings and side branches in Fontanazzi. And all this at depths accessible to any certified cave diver. However, if you are looking for something more demanding, you will also find corridors running at depths of more than 60 and even 120 metres deep.

Webinar on the Fontanazzi cave

In this webinar I will present Fontanazzi from this lesser known, magical side. I will discuss the attractive sites, interesting routes, talk about the logistics of diving and the dangers to watch out for announces Bartłomiej Pitala.

Part of the webinar will be dedicated to the recent expedition that managed to map the deepest and furthest passages of the Fontanazzi cave. These are located more than 1000 m from the entrance and descend to a depth of more than 135 m. During the expedition it was also possible to make a video of the route to the exploration front itself. This is the first video footage of the deepest parts of the cave to be made available to the general public. The premiere of the film along with live commentary will take place during the webinar.

Bartłomiej Pitala

The webinar will be led by Polish cave diver Bartłomiej Pitala. He made his first expedition to Fontanazzi in winter 2018. Like probably most divers who had heard about this cave before, he was uneasy about the thought of what it would be like with the entry clamps? Fortunately, thanks to a good guide, everything went smoothly. After that… it was pure magic. Since then, he has visited the Fontanazzi cave on six trips. This has enabled him to spend more than 60 hours inside and to visit almost all the known passages several times.

Details of the webinar can be found on home page of the event. The webinar will be in Polish. A recording of the meeting with English subtitles will be available on youtube channel.

Fontanazzi is one of the most exciting and diverse caves in Europe. Full of charm, mysterious but also very demanding. You will read more about it in the 12th issue of our the DIVERS24 quarterly magazine! The digital version of the magazine is available free of charge, while the printed version can be purchased from our webshop.
