Last week,The Sixth InternationalCongress on Underwater Archaeology (IKUWA) was held in Frementale, Western Australia, from 28 November to 2 December.

As Elena Labrandero and Angel Tobar report, “The Congress brought together 281 delegates from 39 countries. It opened on 28 November with a UNESCO roundtable on an overview of the world’s regional underwater cultural heritage. The next three days were packed with sessions, 143 papers and 22 posters.”

It was both interesting and scientific. Both archaeologists and ordinary divers presented their achievements, observations and results of their research, which often lasted several years.

Our congress participants also took an active part in the event. Namely, they presented the topic: “Documentation of a submerged hermitage in the reservoir of ‘Buendía’ (Spain)”, which was a great example showing the collaboration between divers and archaeologists from the Museo Nacional de Arqueología Subacuática for the protection of UCH.

The work took 3 years and the results were presented right here in Australia. In addition to Elena and Angel, David Fernandez, Rocio Castill, David Munuera and Rogelio de la Vega also took part in the research.

Angel Tobar and Ramon Orrite also had their poster on the topic: “Art and documentation serving the underwater archaeology in the interpretation of history”. Unfortunately there were no representatives from Poland among the speakers.

All congress topics can be found here.

IKUWA7 in 2020 will be held in Helsinki, Finland!

Many thanks to Elena Labrandero and Angel Tobar for reporting especially for Divers24 and for the photos they sent.
