An unusual situation occurred in Egypt, where while diving in the coastal waters of Hurghada, a diver was surrounded by a school of fish seeking refuge from a large whale shark! This unusual behaviour was fortunately captured on video.

Tobias Sachs, together with his buddie Reinhart Hoft, were just conducting a dive in the waters of the Red Sea when suddenly the fish began to gather around him, forming the shape of a ball. At first the diver was confused, not knowing what was happening, fortunately one of the people accompanying them kept a cool head and captured the whole situation on film.

The school of fish sought refuge near the diver, escaping from the whale shark. While the formation of schools of fish into similar shapes is no novelty it has been recorded before (sometimes in the form of extremely spectacular photographs), it has never before taken place with the participation of a diver.

There were several other divers nearby who were amazed by the whole situation and, as they reported later on the surface, also jealous. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of such an unusual interaction?
