Fatal diving accidents in Koparki and Honoratka quarries

Last weekend, two fatal diving accidents occurred in Poland. The first of them took place in the Koparki quarry and the second in the Honoratka quarry.

The first accident happened at the Koparki quarry in Jaworzno. The incident took place on Saturday, when the base was hosting Diving Demo Days. At one point a man emerged from the water and was obviously in trouble. He was waving his arms and trying to stay afloat.

The whole situation was quickly noticed by people at the shelters which are located on the bank. The victim of the accident surfaced quite close to the platform. At help for the injured A man jumped into the water and immediately pulled him to the shore. A moment later a rescuer from the volunteer fire brigade rushed to help, and the emergency services were called to the scene.

Unfortunately, despite the quick reaction of those present at the scene and the arrival of two ambulances, the victim could not be saved. The injured man was a Czech citizen who visited the quarry in Koparki in Jaworzno that day. From the information available we know that the diver was about 45 years old, diving with a single cylinder and a dry suit. According to eyewitness accounts, the probable cause of death could have been a heart attack.

Unfortunately, this was not the end of the bad news. One day later, on Sunday, another fatal accident occurred. This time, the incident took place in the Honoratka quarry. According to the information we have received, the victim was planning a long dive and dived to a depth of 50 m. The dive was carried out on an open circuit using a two-bottle set and gas mixtures.

At around 6.30pm emergency services received a report that there had been an accident at the Honoratka quarry. A man went diving and did not return. The search operation lasted until late in the evening, unfortunately without results. This morning firefighters resumed the search.
