A sensational find has taken place in the waters off the east coast of England! Employees of a company dealing with the construction of wind farms came across the wreck of a lost German submarine from the First World War. The vessel discovered by divers was SM U-31, which went missing during a patrol in 1915, along with 4 officers and 31 crew members.

For more than a century, the fate of the ship and the German submariners remained unknown and one could only speculate as to the end of the last patrol on which they set off on 13 January 1915 from Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany. An examination revealed that the fate of the 58-metre vessel and her crew was sealed when she ran aground about 90 km off the English coast. She has since remained at the bottom of the North Sea at a depth of about 30 metres.

The work, carried out over the past two years, has successfully scanned an area in the southern North Sea four times the size of London.

Immediately after the discovery of the wreck, its identity was typed as a Dutch submarine that sank in 1940. Only the reconnaissance carried out by the team of divers revealed its true and unexpected identity. It was only after a reconnaissance by a team of divers revealed its true and unexpected identity that the wreck was discovered. As it has been established, no work will be carried out in the vicinity of the wreck, so as not to disturb the final resting place of the Kaiserlischemarine sailors.

“When conducting this type of work and scanning the seabed, we always expect to see a wreck. But the discovery of such an unusual vessel is something completely different, a real surprise and an opportunity to close a chapter in history. It is also a unique opportunity to provide information on the fate of the sailors to their families and loved ones, who may have always wondered what happened on their last patrol?” – Charlie Jordan, of ScottishPower Renewables, said.

According to the information provided by the press office of the company responsible for the discovery of the wreck, the ship is in remarkably good condition, despite having spent over 100 years on the seabed.
