On 1 September, two researchers dived into Turkey’s Lake Salda as part of a scientific study of its ecosystem. The researchers hope that the data collected will help uncover key information about early microbial life.
Supporting the research, which is led by geologist Nurgul Balci and environmental engineer Orhan Ince, as well as the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, diver Tahsin Ceylan and his buddies carried out five, ten and fifteen metre dives. The divers completed the assigned task and collected the necessary data.
In the depths of the basin there is a formation that represents the ecosystem in which it is located at its maximum level. All because it functions away from external factors. These formations would provide very important data on early microbial structures. With the data we get from here, we will be able to “travel back in time”. We will get important information to find traces of life in its present and past forms, including the distant prehistoric past. – Balci said.
Geologist Nurgula Balci from Istanbul Technical University also explained that they collected from the depths of the lake biological traces in the form of carbon isotopes. They will now conduct microbiological tests in the laboratory. The team will then compare the collected data with the carbonate structures found around the lake.
Scientists study underwater treasures of Turkey’s Lake Salda
Underwater research in Lake Salda to provide critical data for NASA’s Perseverance rover mission on Mars, says expert v.aa.com.tr/2353041

According to diver Tahsin Ceylan, there is an ideal ecosystem beneath the surface of Lake Salda.
It’s a beauty that is constantly evolving, but needs good protection. I love diving in Lake Salda with my camera. Under the water of the lake you will find unique flora and fauna and rock structures. – describes Lake Caylan
The similarities between a lake located in Burdur province and a crater on Mars, has attracted the interest of NASA.
By studying and analysing the collected samples, scientists hope to determine which point in the lake better preserves traces of life. The results of this research could prove important for the US space agency NASA. The Americans, using the Perseverance rover, are currently investigating the surface of Mars. As it turns out, the Martian crater studied by the robot has many features in common with Salda Lake.
The team hopes to be able to present the results of their work at an international symposium. If the matter develops successfully, a scientific centre could be set up near the reservoir, especially as the researchers are supported in their endeavours by the ministry.
