On 28 October, as part of the “Clean up the World 2017” campaign, divers and other numerous participants met in Mikołajki at Mikołajskie Lake, in order to clean up the bottom of this body of water.

The action was organised by the Mazury Voluntary Rescue Service and the Great Masurian Lakes Protection Foundation thanks to co-financing from the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Olsztyn.

This year, the organisers’ objective was to pick up as much rubbish as possible from the road bridge to the Sailing Village. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, 15 divers turned up for the briefing and 16 people collected litter from the divers. During the scheduled dive, a mass of rubbish lying on the bottom was excavated.

The containers provided for the storage of waste were filled to the brim. Among the finds were many glass bottles, metal objects, tyres, a toilet seat and a road sign. Among the gems found by the divers were: an old skate, a decorated glass bottle and an old German bowl.

After hard and noble work, the time came for a warm meal and common talks. Everyone was waiting for the most important point, that is the settlement of a competition in which a set of APEKS breathing apparatuses was to be won.

Three people were drawn from among the divers who, after answering questions posed to them, moved on to the final round, in which only an extra round determined the winner. Another prize was a watch funded by the Casio G-SCHOCK brand representative and intended for the participants who bravely helped on land.

Part of the cleaned section was the marina of Żegluga Mazurska. For this reason, Żegluga Mazurska from Giżycko donated two vouchers, for any cruise in the 2018 season for the whole family.

The organisers hope that the action will contribute to improving the cleanliness of the lakes in Masuria. There is probably still a lot to be done, so they are already starting to plan the next edition of the Diving Clean Up the World, to which they cordially invite everyone!
