The legendary Austrian diver and deep-sea explorer Hans Hass has died at the age of 94. During his life he became an icon of diving and one of the most famous researchers of the marine environment in the 20th century.

Born in 1919 in Vienna, Hass documented his research and discoveries, transferring them to the pages of 32 books and tape in 73 film productions he made while travelling on his boat “Xarifa”

Hass’s first film was released just after the war in 1951. The world he showed on television screens in Adventures in the Red Sea fascinated audiences and won him public opinion.

He was particularly fascinated by sharks. Hence one of his nicknames “Lord of the sharks”. Throughout his career, he tried to fight for the true image of the shark in people’s consciousness, trying to deny what directors fed people in films like “Jaws”.

At the time when he started his adventure with diving, he was a pioneer. Many elements of diving equipment, he first created in his head, and then put them into practice. This was the case, for example, with the underwater diving camera, special fins, or breathing apparatus, allowing greater independence from the research vessel.
