Diving injury investigation – new DAN report

Divers Alert Network has been monitoring diving injuries and accidents for over 30 years. In an article published in the prestigious British medical journal Public Health, a team of DAN scientists led by Petar Denoble and Peter Buzzacott, estimated the risk of death during recreational diving at less than 2 cases per million dives.

Researchers have found that one in 10,000 emergency department visits was due to a diving-related accident. Buzzacott, director of accident monitoring and prevention at DAN, said:

[blockquote style=”2″] “This is an important reason why DAN runs a 24-hour medical hotline: to help not only injured divers, but also medical staff who may not see a diving injury and may not have the experience in this area that our medical team has.”[/blockquote]

The study involved 380,000 surveyed diving participants and 563 deaths in the USA over a 10-year period. Despite the fact that the results of the study are reassuring and one can venture to say that at the moment recreational diving counts as a very safe sport. DAN President and CEO Bill Ziefle notes:

[blockquote style=”2″]”DAN’s vision is for every dive to be accident and injury free. We will continue to monitor diving accidents and safety and promote safe practices in diving communities around the world.”[/blockquote]

The full report was published today here.
