Coulson, 60, has written more than 40 reports for National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler. He has worked mainly in Europe, photographing and filming locations stretching from the Arctic and Scandinavia to southern France and Italy.

According to the information available, the photographer lost consciousness during the dive. The unfortunate dive took place during the fifth day of diving of a 17-day National Geographic expedition to the Norwegian fjords and the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.

According to the members of the expedition, Colson signalled his partner to surface at some point during the dive and lost consciousness moments later. After surfacing, he was immediately transferred to a Zodiac vessel and transported back to the ship. The still living photographer was then taken to Sandnessjoen Hospital, from where he was transferred to a larger clinic in Tromso. He died on the evening of Wednesday 27 May.
