Diving accident in Malta - Polish diver is dead

This morning, Monday 6 July, there was a fatal diving accident involving a Polish national in Malta. As the Times of Malta reported on its website, a 69-year-old man died while diving in the Wied iż-Żurrieq area, which is popular with divers.

From the information we have been given we know that the dive was conducted with an instructor and the likely cause of death was a heart attack.

When it became clear that the diver was in trouble, a Red Cross rescuer rushed to his rescue and immediately jumped into the water. The Pole was transported to land and was resuscitated until an ambulance arrived on the scene.

The injured man was then taken to Mater Dei Hospital. Unfortunately, the Polish man could not be saved and was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. At the moment there are still no details about the incident and the case is being investigated by local services.

The area around Wied iż-Żurrieq is an extremely popular place among diving enthusiasts. The legendary Blue Grotto and the Um El Faroud wreck, among others, are located here.
