The incident occurred in the waters surrounding Big Sandy Island, located within the state of Queensland, north of Brisbane. A man hunting with a crossbow was attacked by an unidentified species of shark and was bitten on the leg. Despite the assistance of rescuers who arrived on the scene, the 36-year-old died as a result of his injuries.
From the discussion that followed the news of the incident, it emerged that the island area is a place commonly associated with the presence of great white and tiger sharks, two species that grow to a considerable size and are considered to pose the greatest threat to humans.
Sharks are natural inhabitants of Australian waters, but accidents involving them are extremely rare. There has not been a single fatal shark attack in 2019, but 2020 has been particularly unlucky in this regard with four such incidents to date.
