If we conducted a poll, most people would probably answer in the affirmative to the question – “Would you like to work as a diver?”, imagining blue waters, coral reefs and sunny beaches. However, if the question “Would you like to work as a diver in the fire brigade?” was asked of divers, there would probably be few takers.
We all love diving. To everyone who has dived to the other side of the water surface, the underwater world has shown its beautiful face. Full of wonders and miracles, unusual inhabitants, picturesque places and time capsules in the form of sunken “treasures” from the past.
Certainly also for people who have never dived, photos and films from underwater make a huge impression. Undoubtedly, because they tempt with magic colours of coral reefs, encounters with wonderful creatures living under the surface, or with peace, silence and blue sky filling the frame.
There is, however, another face of diving. Being a complete opposite of what an average Kowalski thinks about when hearing the word diving. This is the daily service and tasks facing the divers of the Fire Brigade. Within the framework of their tasks, the fire brigade divers have various duties, and one of them is the least pleasant one – searching for the bodies of drowned persons.
In the following interview Bartłomiej, who has already served 11 years, talks about his work as a diver in the Fire Service such service. The interview was conducted as part of the popular internet talk-show “7 metres underground”.
