Even if you don’t need one today, who knows what will happen in the future? Divers Alert Network is calling on divers to support a campaign at the end of 2017 to help service and increase the number of hyperbaric chambers available worldwide.

Used for the treatment of diving disorders, post-trauma and surface decompression, hyperbaric chambers are still a rarity in some countries. The ‘Help divers beat the bends’ campaign is intended to make divers aware that their health and lives depend on the technical condition of the decompression chamber. They need to be in place, accessible and working efficiently and their operators need to be properly trained.

Petar Denoble of DAN also mentions Caribbean dive resorts, which have recently lost a lot of tourist and medical infrastructure as a result of the hurricanes raging in the area. DAN’s action is to help properly prepare these areas as a safe destination for divers.

The fundraiser is organised through RCAP, a non-profit organisation that promotes collaboration between hyperbaric medicine centres. Founded in 1993, it is managed by Divers Alert Network Inc. The organisation is sustained by donations from donors.

To send one DAN hyperbaric specialist to a chamber – which is often located in popular dive spots, such as a remote island – a sum of around $3,800 is needed. DAN chairman Bill Ziefle encourages even symbolic donations to the organisation’s accounts. We never know when we may need the help of highly qualified staff and specialist equipment.

More information about the collection can be found on the DAN website.
