Tom Grundmann, who set a world record at the weekend, has died

French diver Tom Grundmann, who set a world record for the longest pool immersion on 8-9 December, has died. As part of the Telethon in Dijon, the Frenchman remained underwater for 31 hours. Two days later, on Tuesday 12 December, he died during maintenance work carried out on his boat.

According to reports in French-language media, his death was not directly related to the record-breaking dive. Grundmann was 44 years old and was the founder of the diving school “Les p’tites bulles” in Sciez in the Auvergne-Rhodan-Alpes region.

News of his death was reported by the French Federation of Studies and Underwater Sports (FFSEM).

[blockquote style=”2″]”Tom died while doing repair work on his boat. He was not carrying out any diving activities at the time,” we can read in the statement[/blockquote].

[blockquote style=”2″]”His death is not related to the record. There are no grounds to carry out any medical activities in this direction” – announced Jean-Pierre Guerret, FFSEM president[/blockquote].

Tom Grundmann was also the holder of the previous record of 30 hours spent underwater, which he set in 2016. In both cases, he undertook his immersions on the occasion of campaigns raising funds to advance medical research.
