On 16 September 2012, over 70 volunteers gathered at Mammoth Lake by the Garwolin ring road to clean the reservoir as part of the Clean Up the World campaign. More than half of them were divers, who could choose an entry from the northern shore – a milder one for the less advanced divers, or from the southern shore, where the depth reaches 11 metres – intended for the more advanced divers.
The whole operation lasted around five hours. We managed to collect half a container of waste of all types. From municipal waste such as cans and bottles, to automotive waste such as old car tyres and number plates, to waste left over from the gravel pit in the form of pipes used to drain water from the pit. The atmosphere was great, so everyone had fun both above and below the water. As befits the Mazovia region, the diving conditions were not the easiest. The water temperature at the surface reached 19 degrees, but at a depth of 14.5 meters it was only 8 degrees Celsius. C. Visibility depended on the depth. Up to 4-5 metres it was satisfactory. Then a layer of cloudy suspension appeared, which disappeared 8-9 metres below the water surface, effectively cutting off the light supply to the deeper parts of the basin.
For help in the action we would like to thank the WOPR Garwolin, the Regata motorboat and kayak club in Garwolin, the Volunteer Fire Brigade Water Rescue from Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, and all the partners of the event: Poviat Starosty in Garwolin, Nuras.info, Forum-Nuras.com, Podwodna Przygoda Diving Fair, Wielki Błękit, Divers24.pl, Skauting.pl, Decathlon, Vektor Sport, TUSA, Poseidon, CoconutPR, XDivers, Safe Water Associacion, Raja Diving Centre, Nurkacz.pl, LOTTO, Our Earth Foundation and Ekolider.
This was another successful reservoir clean-up organised by the Sub-Warsaw Exploration Group, but certainly not the last. The next reservoir cleanup will take place on April 7, 2013 in Glinianka Cietrzewia (Warszawa Włochy) on the occasion of the Water Cleanliness Week. You are cordially invited. We checked – it’s possible to dive there.
